Originally, I wanted to write a coming-out-comedy but when I finished that draft, it felt like it was lacking… that is until I read that and then also a re-watched of a favorite movie of mine, Sky High and in my next draft I added superpowers as well. the Homo Sapiens Agenda around the time it first released. But I was inspired to add a few things after Simon vs. D.: Well, I didn’t first think to share it much of anywhere, I started sharing it on WattPad, finished it but that draft is old and not mostly reflective of how it is now. What inspired you to write JUDD? Like what made you think, this a story I need to write and share with people? RITA: I think it’s so important in life to just go with what feels right for you, especially when in regards to your sexuality. J.D.: Oh yeah, I’ve noticed that, labels have been pretty ambiguous, when it comes to you and honestly, I think it’s really awesome because while I tell people what I am, I know it’s really no ones business if I choose it not to be. RITA: From the start I was always very against putting labels in the story and it took me a while before I realized that it probably had to do with the fact that I personally don’t like putting a label on myself haha.

Showing us what it looks like where labels don’t matter, we can just be ourselves, love who we want without the scrutiny of being told what we can and cannot do depending on who we are. D.: Those kind of stories are so needed in the world.

They don’t even use labels like bi, gay, asexual etc, so we don’t get to see any coming out stories or characters having to figure out their sexuality. This a world where homophobia doesn’t exist and no one has to hide their sexuality out of fear of being persecuted. RITA: There’s quite a bit of representation but I’d say it’s done pretty casually.

I know you’re a member of the queer community, what does the representation look like in your book? D.: I’m looking so forward to learning about Amulet of Wishes, so I’ll just start right off. And thank YOU for letting me draw your characters I had a lot of fun with them and I’m looking forward to learning more about them in JUDD. RITA: Aw thank you so much, it means a lot to hear you say that.
